Plexiglass is cheap, easy to cut, and looks good in this application. Buy tinted/smoked plexiglass if you don't want to paint it. If you have woodworking tools and commons sense, you can cut it yourself. If you don't, then you can buy it already cut-to-size. "Doing it right" doesn't solely apply to your scenario. There is more than one way to mount electronics and make it look good (and I don't think off-colored textured ABS plastic looks good or is "doing it right" but to each their own).
